Windhoek

Windhoek is a relative small city. The city centre is comparible to an European city centre: wide streets, tall buidlings, etc.
There are two theories why Windhoek is named 'Windhoek'. In 1840, Afrikaner Jonker was the first person to settle himself at the place we now know as Windhoek. Afrikaner Jonker was born in Winterhoek (ZA), maybe he named Windhoek after his place of birth. An other theory is formed because of the wind, or: 'the windy corner', what has been changed into the German language as Windhoek.

When the Apartheid was ruling Souther Africa, Windhoek was seperated in two main area's: Windhoek and Katutura, in which Katutura was the area for the black people. Now the Apartheid is officialy dead, there is no longer a seperation of the two area's, but Katutura is still the area for the poor people.
If you want to go to Katutura, the best option is to go with a guide or tour operator. If you go alone, you need to stay on the main roads, otherwhise you will get lost in the maze of streets.
To get in Katutura, you just have to follow Independece Avenue, from town square, this roads brings you deep in to Katutura.

Accomodation
There are many hotels and bed & breakfasts in the city centre of Windhoek. Outsite Windhoek you can find amazing lodges with sometimes privat wild resorts (Okapuka Ranch i.e.). If you don't like the bussiness in a city centre, this is a perfect option, because you will still be close to Windhoek for a day visit.

Restaurants
There are many excellent restaurants in Windhoek available. Most of the popular places are just outsite the city centre, for example: Joe's Beerhouse: all sort of wild (zebra, kudu, crocodile, etc.), La Marmite, excellen, real African food, Luigi & the fish: a real trendy restaurant with lots of fish.
All the major hotels also have their own restaurant. Hotel Furstenhof is known for its stunning view over the city centre of Windhoek from its restaurant.

Activities
Windhoek is the best place around to do your shoppings, you can find all the shops that you need in Windhoek. In the southern part of Windhoek, you can find a huge shopping mall, which is comparible to a shopping mall in any of the European cities. Here you can also find a cinema with the latest movies, so if you don't know what to do with your last day in Windhoek, this can be a good option.
But the more touristical option is the township tour, these are offered by several tour operators. A guide will show you around in Katutura.
Outsite of Windhoek you can find Daan Viljoen National Park, this is a good place to relaxe and spend the day. There are also lots of privat parks which are worth visiting (Okapuka i.e.).

Safety
Robberies, Car hijack, and other thefts are not common in Windhoek. But the locals will know that you are a tourist, so always stay aware of theft and other crimes, because these crimes still happen.
Otherwhise Windhoek is rather safe to go to, as long as you try to prevent crimes: park your car at secured carparks (this will cost you some Namibian Dollars, depending on how long you have parked your car there.
And you need to avoid some places, for example don't walk around on your own in Katutura, go with a guide and don't walk around in the evening or night.
