Solitaire

Solitaire is a large dot on most road maps, but don't expect much from it. The large dot is caused by the strategic situation, in the middle of an important crossing of the roads from: Windheok, Walvisbaai and Sossusvlei.

Solitaite is not much more than a service station with some extra's, nowaday's you can also find a lodge and a restaurant next to the service station.

Solitaire is the perfect place to make a stop to get your last supplies before you go in to the dessert in Sesriem.

Accomodation
Solitaire has a lodge next to the service station. But the area around Solitaire is worth visiting. There are a few excellent lodges available near Solitaite, some deep into the mountains. It is wise to check availabillity before you set of to on of these lodges, otherwhise you can get suprised by closed lodges, dangerous roads, or other not expected problems.

Solititaire is mostly used as a stopover between the main cities and Sossusvlei, but Solitaire self has much to offer as well. The Naukluft mountains are really stunning to sea and to explore. There are several roads that lead you across the mountains, through riverbed and show you a stunning view of the mountains. It is a great idea to explore these mountains, if you take the C24 towards Windhoek, you will pass the Remhoogte pass. You can also take the D1275, but lorries, coaches and trailers are not allowed on this road, probably that tells you enough about the expected road condition. But the view is amazing.
Most roads in the Solitaire area are in a perfect condition, only the 'bussy' roads between Solitaire and Sesriem can be a bit bumpy for 2wd.

If you don't like it to drive on sand and gravel roads, you can also take the more luxurious way of travel: Solitaire has its own little airstrip, several tour operators offer fly-in safari's from Windhoek and Swakopmund.
