Moonlandscape

The moonlandscape is part of the Welwitschia Drive. A tour you can make with your own car. This route brings you to all kinds special points and finally to one of the oldest Welwitschia of Namibia, halfway this tour you can find the moonlandscape.
To drive the Welwitschia Drive, you need to get a permit at the NWR office in Swakopmund. You also get a map from the area.

The road of the Welwitschia Drive is at some points very bad maintained. A 4x4 is the best choise for this route. You can use a 2wd, but you have to drive really slowly at some stages. Especialy the last stage, towards the 1500 year old Welwitschia is very bad.

Near the moonlandscape you can also find a dessert, for long distances you only see a flat sand landscape.
The Welwitschia Drive is great to drive in the morning. If you bring your picknick basket, you can have a picknick at one of the view points near the moonlandscape.

Even when it is cold and foggy in Swakopmund, the temperature near the moonlandscape can be very hot (even in winter), there are no trees or anything that creates shadow, so be aware if you go to the moonlandscape, bring enough water and sunblock.

Accomodation
The moonlandscape is located very close to Swakopmund. If you follow the C28, turn left after a few kilometers, where the signs say that the Welwitschia Drive is starting at that point.
The best place to spend the night is Swakopmund, there is plenty of accomodation available for every budget.
Some tour operators offer tour that include the Welwitschia Drive, if you don't want to drive your self, this is a good alternative. This can be booked by some of the lodges and hotels, and sertainly at the tourist information.
