Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is a large statue on Ellis Island, in the harbor of New York. It welcomes everybody who enters America: immigrants or Americans who are returning to their home country.
The Statue of Liberty presented to the United States of America by the French in 1886. The French wanted to commerorate an cellebrate the 100 year's of independence. The design for the Statue of Liberty has been made by the worldwide known architect Gustave Eiffel, Frederic Bartholdi made the Statue of Liberty a few year's later.
The statue self is 46 meters tall, but with stone pedestal, the statue reaches up to 93 meter.
Liberty Island was named 'Liberty Island' in 1924, when the Statue of Liberty became a National Historical Monument. In 1956, Ellis Island also became a National Historical Monument. Nowaday's when you visit the Statue of Liberty, a tour to Ellis Island is often included.
In 1984 the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were inscribed as a World Heritage side by UNESCO.
After the terrorist attacks of 9/11 2001, the Statue of Liberty closed it's doors for safety reasons. After increasing the safety measurements, the Statue reopend in 2004.
When you would like to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, you can buy an entrance ticket in Castle Clinton in battery Park. The entrance fee will cost you around the $ 11,50.
