Ground Zero

Ground Zero is the English term used to describe the point on the earth's surface where an explosion occurs. In this case Ground Zero refers to the former Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the memorial site.

On September 11 2001, 4 planes were hijacked by terrorists. Two of them hit the Twin Towers. One other hit the Pentagon and the last one crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. After the planes hit the Twin Towers, both the towers collapsed. Almost 3000 people died instantly and many were injured.

The terrorist attacks of 9/11 changed the view of New York drasticly. The World Trade Center has always been the highest buildings in town, but with the collapse of both of the towers, the Empire State Building is the Highest Building yet again.

Now the ruins of the former World Trade Center have been cleared, the construction of new buildings has started. The main building: The Freedom Tower, which will rise 514 meter high will be located at the former site of the Twin Towers. 5 Smaller towers will be built around the Freedom Tower.
A 9/11 memorial monument will be built in front of the Freedom Tower.
