Grand Central Station

Grand Central Station is not the official name, but the most used name. Officially the building is named Grand Central Terminal.
The first trainstation was built in 1871. But in a few decades the railroad transport grew and more tracks were needed. In this case more tracks also ment a larger building. Between 1899 and 1913 the old buildings were demolished and a new building was built.
Tthourhout the year's the building wasn't looked after properly. Many architects propesed plans to built a new building, some of the plans showed building higher than the World Trade Centre. In 1978 the High Court finally declared that it was more important to preserve Grand Central Terminal as a national historical monument than built a new highrise building.

Grand Central Terminal was safed by Donal Trump. He bought a hotel next to the station and restored the hotel. When the hotel was finished he asked the municipallity if they could allow him to restore the main building of the Grand Central Terminal. The main work finished in 1980.
In 1994 the inside of the buildings were resored by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. In 4 year's time, the older equipment was replaced by modern electronic equipment.

Nowaday's the station has to deal with more than 500.000 people a day. For this amount of people it uses 67 tracks and 44 platforms. This means that Grand Central Station is the largest station in the world.
