The architect (Henry J. Hardenbergh) tried to built the most decadent and expensive residential building. When he started looking for a place to built his plan, he came by a farming land, near Central Park, where at that moment no building excisted. To his opinion, this was the perfect place for his building.
The building was finished in 1884, and far before the building was finished all the 93 apartments were sold.

The Dakota Building became world news on 8 December 1980, when John Lennon was shot in front of the door of the Dakota Building, where he lived.
