Central Park

During the 19th century New York was a very popular city for immigrants. The city was rapidly growing, so more and more building were built. But the people of New York preferred more open spaces. Finally in 1853 the New York municipality made a piece of land available to built a park. The park started at 59th street and ended at 106th street, with a total of 2,8 square kilometers.

But when the park was finished, no body took care of the park, so the park came in a rapid decline. Until 1934, when all the city parks of New York were to be restored to it's original beauty. All the buildings and monuments were restored and all the dead trees were removed.
But again, after the Second World War became a area you did not want to go. Central Park was known for the extremely high crimelevel. Murder, rape and drugdeals were a common fact in Central Park.
But thanks to Rudy Giuliani the crimelevel in New York went down and New York became safe. Today, Central Park has it's very own police department, that makes sure the park is safe.

Nowaday's the park is a popular place to go for running, skating or just walking. More than 25 million people every year visit Central Park in New York.
