Transport in London
London is an incredible large city. If you need to go from Hyde Park to the London Towerbridge, you will have to cover more than 7 kilometers, you can walk this, but if you go to all the places of interest by foot, you will be exhausted. Therefor London developed the very complex but advanced public transport. London is known for the very efficient underground. In the city centre their will always be a close public transport available for your position, London underground or bus service.
London underground
The London underground is known as one of the best underground services in the world. Throughout whole the city you can find stations for the London underground, divided in Zones. If you need to travel in the centre of London only, you can use a 2 zone card. But if you need to go further, for example to London Heathrow, you will need a 6 zone card.
You can buy the underground car for every ride, but is smarter to buy an all Day Travelcard, with this card you can use make unlimited use of the public transportation in London. You could also buy an Oyster Card, with which you only pay as you go, therefor the Oyster Card is very cheap.
Throughout the day, the London underground will depart every couple of minutes. All the stations will close around 12 at night and open early in the morning again.
Some of the underground stations are excessible for wheelchairs, these stations are marked with a wheelchair sign on the London underground map.
Bus service
The London public transport also uses a bus service that can bring you to any place in the city. Most people know the London busses from the old, red double-decker busses, but nowadays, the old busses made place for modern busses with the newest technologies. Most of the modern busses have wheelchair acces at the rear door.
You can buy single tickets every ride, but better is to buy an all Day Travelcard which you can use for the London underground and the London bus service.
During the night the London bus service uses the night service, some of the lines will ride less frequently. You can see the night times at every busstop. Remember that it will be bussy in the busses at night because the London underground is closed at night.
The old double-decker busses can still be seen in the city centre. Mostly the City Sightseeing companies uses the old busses to do the sightseeing tours. Day travelcards are not valid for the City Sightseeing tours.
Taxi's
London is also known for the classic look of the black cabs. For years these cabs dominated the streets in the centre of London. Today, you can see more different coloured taxi's driving the streets of London.
Almost all the London cabs are wheelchair friendly.
In London you can stop a taxi by holding up your hand. You can see a free taxi by looking at the yellow rooftop light, if it is lighted, the taxi is free.
Alternative transport
Throughout the city centre you can find riksja's, the drivers are willing to bring you to any place near the city centre.
You can also rent a bike in London, there are several companies where you can hire a bike. But for the 'normal' tourist this is not a very good idea, the London traffic can be very bussy and hectic.
Last but not least, there are several companies that over boat trips on the Thames. Mostly you will depart and end at the same place, some companies however have multiple loading docks, so that you can depart from the Embankment and finish near the Towerbridge.
