Westminster Abbey
The Westminster Abbey is the official church of the British Royal Family. According to the excisting traditions, Westminster Abbey is the place where coronations take place and is the burial site for English monarchs.
YTou can also find memorials of politicians, scientists or others important persons in the church, for example the memorials of Sir Winston Churchill, William Shakespeare and many more.
The first church was built in 616 at the same place as we now find the Westminster Abbey. In the following centuries the small church grew to an abbey, and from an abbey to a complex of buildings. In 1050, Edward the Confessor ordered a complete reconstruction of the abbey. In 1579 the ruling queen decided that Westminster Abbey should no longer be part of the diocesan bishop, but instead a sovereign of the British monarch.
She named the Westminster Abbey: The Collegiate Church of St. Peter, and gave controle to a dean.
During the 18th century the two western towers of the church have been built, which we still see today as the entrance of the church.
Until the 19th century, Westminster was the third seat of learning in England, after Oxford and Cambridge.
Beceause of it's beauty, UNESCO placed the Westminster Abby on the World Heritage list.
