Tower of London
Around 1078, Willem the Conqueror ordered the White Tower to be built inside the SE angle of the City walls. This was as much to protect the Normans from the people of the City of London as to protect London from outside invaders.
The fortification was completed between 1275 and 1285 by Edward I who built the outer curtain wall, completely enclosing the inner wall and thus creating a concentric double defence. Until late 17th century the Tower of London served as the residential palace of the Kings and Queen's. From the 17th century onwards, the Tower of London served a various number of tasks mostly it was used as a prison, until the Second World War.
Today we can visit the Tower of London as a museum where you can see the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.
The Tower of London has always been gaurded by Yeoman Warders (Beafeaters). You can only become a Yeoman Warder after 22 year's of service in the British Army. Nowaday's we see the Yeoman Warders most of the times as guides instead of gaurds, but they still wear the same traditional clothing as they did centuries ago.
You can also see the traditional Ravens in the. Tower of London. It was said that as long as the Ravens would stay in the Tower of London, England would not be attacked. One of the Yeoman Warders is the Ravenmaster, the one who takes care of the Raven.
In the present times there are 8 Ravens, all of them are fulltime employee of the Royal British Army.
You can visit the Tower of London and see the inside of the castle with the Crown Jewels and many war instruments from the past. The entrance fee will cost you around £12,-
